We are using Hibernate Search 3.4.0.Final with Hibernate Core 3.6.7 and Spring Framework 3.1.2 on both Weblogic and Websphere environments.

We are calling MassIndexer in a non transactional method.
On weblogic everything works fine but on websphere environment we got an exception below.

ERROR [OptionallyWrapInJTATransaction (95)] - <Error while executing runnable wrapped in a JTA transaction> java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException

Why are we getting this error while we are calling it in a non transactional method?
How can we overcome this problem?

Could you post some more details? That might help to understand what's happening; I'm afraid we didn't test it on Weblogic nor Websphere, but from more details we might be able to provide some suggestion.

Generally speaking, it's possible that the problem you have is long solved, as version 3.4.0.Final is very old and lots of improvements and fixes were done after that release.
